Part of a Tau-type figurine. The precise location it was found on the Acropolis is not known. The figure has a polos with a wide reddish band on her head. The hair which emerge over the forehead as well as the facial characteristics are rendered in red colour. The arms folded neatly over the breasts are decorated with horizontal and vertical lines, which depict the garment details. Red dots form the plait that falls on the nape.
Figurines of this type are frequently found at sanctuaries, graves, even houses. They have been interpreted as deities, nurturers or mere dedications. However, their constant retrieval in children burials has led some researchers to suggest that they were also used as toys. On the Acropolis they were most likely votives by individuals to a fertility deity, perhaps to the goddess Athena, whom they sometimes portray.
